2011 Soil Judging Contest
The annual
three county Soil Judging Contest was held on September 27, 2011, on the Lee
Simms farm south of Altamont. Again this year we held a couple of contests
instead of just one. The students are so busy with activities that it’s hard to
fit everything into the school day, so we try to make it as easy as possible for
everyone to be involved that wants to participate. And the best way to do this
is to hold the contest at different times throughout the day and then grade the
test the following day and let the teachers and students know who the winner
is. It seems to be harder on us but a lot more convenient for the schools.
Just like in
past years the students have a practice pit and four pits to judge. They had to
score each pit on things like: topsoil depth, texture, structure, color, and
percent of slope. Then they have to determine the tillage system that would be
best for the field using four crop rotations, and still keep the soil loss below
“T”.
Of course
like I have told you all before, I am no expert at this contest by any means,
but I know one thing for sure - I would not want to judge some of these pits. I
think Tony actually looks for the toughest spots he can find. I have actually
seen the soil scientist scratch his head before he decided what the answer
should be.
This year’s
overall winner was Altamont.
But South
Central was the winner for Fayette County.
Odin was the
winner for Marion County
Of course
Altamont was the winner for Effingham County.
